Breaking the Cycle of Abuse

My mother recently passed away and as my friends and I delivered her clothes to help needy women, I remember back to a time that I learned of a terrifying time in my mom’s life. I wasn’t told of my mom’s history of abuse as a child until my grandmother (her mom) passed away 25 years ago. At that time, I first heard of my mother, as a young girl under 8 years old, constantly trying to get between her father and mother as her mother was getting beaten by him. That led to my mother getting physically beaten for years. When my grandmother left her husband because of the abuse (a grandfather that I never met) my mother and her mom were kicked out of the local church (denomination unknown) for being a “bad wife” even though the entire community knew the true story. I guess things were pretty strange in that small farm town of less than 200 people.
My mom told me about the physical abuse and the teasing she got in school for getting kicked out of the only church in town. She told me that she vowed to herself back in the 1940’s that if she ever had children she would break the cycle of violence, as well as lead her children to Christianity. She did both. Hearing that story 25 years ago made me realize how tough my mother was and how much she loved me and my brother because there was never a threat of violence or violent language in our household. My mom also told me at that time that should I ever marry and have children that I should never be verbally or physically abusive to any of them. Then she told me “never discuss this with anyone because it’s a history that I am ashamed of.” We never discussed this again. I share this story with you because as a father of three beautiful children and a loving wife I look to my mother in heaven as the reason the history of abuse was broken in our family.
